About Appendicitis
Appendicitis is a condition in which the appendix becomes inflamed and infected, causing severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and loss of appetite. The pain usually begins near the navel and later shifts to the lower right side of the abdomen. If not treated in time, the appendix can burst, leading to serious infection inside the abdomen. Therefore, timely surgery is the most effective treatment. The surgical procedure, called appendectomy, involves removing the inflamed appendix. It is most commonly performed using the laparoscopic (minimally invasive) method, where small incisions are made and a camera is used to guide the surgery. This technique usually results in less pain, smaller scars, and faster recovery compared to open surgery. The procedure is performed under anesthesia to ensure the patient remains comfortable. The hospital stay is usually 1–3 days, depending on the patient’s condition. After surgery, mild pain, bloating, or temporary weakness may occur, but these symptoms are generally manageable with medications. Patients are usually able to resume a normal diet the next day, and early walking is encouraged to help with recovery and prevent complications. Most people recover fully within 7–10 days and can gradually return to their regular activities. Living without the appendix does not affect normal life, and patients typically continue a healthy lifestyle after recovery.
