A hernia occurs when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, creating a visible bulge. It may cause pain, discomfort, heaviness, or swelling, especially while lifting heavy objects, coughing, or standing for long periods. If left untreated, a hernia can increase in size and may lead to complications such as obstruction or strangulation of the intestine, which can become a medical emergency. Surgery is the most effective treatment for a hernia. The procedure repairs the weakened area of the abdominal wall using stitches or a surgical mesh to strengthen the tissue and prevent the hernia from recurring. Hernia repair can be performed using laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery or open surgery, depending on the size, type, and complexity of the hernia. The surgery is performed under anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. Most patients require a hospital stay of about 1–2 days. After surgery, mild pain, swelling, or stiffness may occur, but these symptoms are usually temporary and can be managed with medications. Patients are encouraged to start walking the same day or the next day to promote circulation and recovery. Heavy lifting and strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks to allow proper healing. With proper care and follow-up, most patients recover fully and are able to return to their normal daily activities and work within a few weeks.
