<p>It is commonly recommended for benign (non-cancerous) tumors such as pleomorphic adenoma or Warthin’s tumor that are limited to the superficial lobe of the parotid gland.</p>

<p>The facial nerve lies between the superficial and deep lobes of the parotid gland. During surgery, the nerve is carefully identified and protected to minimize the risk of injury.</p>

<p>Possible complications include temporary facial weakness, numbness near the ear, swelling, infection, or Frey’s syndrome (sweating over the cheek while eating). Serious complications are uncommon.</p>

<p>Most patients recover within 1–2 weeks and can return to normal daily activities soon after. Any temporary facial weakness usually improves over time.</p>
