Superficial parotidectomy is a surgical procedure in which only the outer (superficial) part of the parotid gland is removed, while the deeper portion of the gland is preserved.
It is commonly recommended for benign (non-cancerous) tumors such as pleomorphic adenoma or Warthin’s tumor that are limited to the superficial lobe of the parotid gland.
The facial nerve lies between the superficial and deep lobes of the parotid gland. During surgery, the nerve is carefully identified and protected to minimize the risk of injury.
Possible complications include temporary facial weakness, numbness near the ear, swelling, infection, or Frey’s syndrome (sweating over the cheek while eating). Serious complications are uncommon.
Most patients recover within 1–2 weeks and can return to normal daily activities soon after. Any temporary facial weakness usually improves over time.
