One-sided varicose veins occur when veins in one leg become enlarged and twisted due to weak or damaged valves that allow blood to pool. This increased pressure causes visible bulging veins and symptoms such as heaviness, aching, swelling, itching, and nighttime cramps. The condition may develop due to prolonged standing, obesity, previous leg injury, pregnancy, or hereditary vein weakness. Sometimes, only one leg is affected because of localized vein valve damage or deeper venous obstruction on that side. Diagnosis is confirmed with a venous Doppler ultrasound to check for valve reflux. Treatment includes compression stockings for mild cases and minimally invasive options like laser ablation (EVLA), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), foam sclerotherapy, or glue therapy for permanent relief. These are day-care procedures with quick recovery and excellent results.
